Why Increase the Battery Life of an UPS?
The battery that comes with the UPS are small and offers just couple of minutes of power supply, enough to turn off the computer in the event of a power outage. If the period of power outage is short, you may never need to turn off the computer.
Replacing with a car (or truck) battery will give plenty more time to still use it. This is specially true if your computer or server is power demanding, you have multiple monitors, external hard drives, speakers, etc.
If you have only a laptop, then you don't require to change the battery of your UPS.
Steps for increasing the battery life of an UPS
First, you need to open up the UPS case and replace the bulky 12V acid battery inside. Identify the positive (+) and the negative (-) terminals and drill two holes to take the cables out of the case.
Use a cable with the appropriate terminal endings. A twin AWG #18 will work for most cases. If the terminals of the UPS are female, then look for male terminals and viceversa.
The terminals for the battery has to be rounded alligator clip.
You will need to solder it with tin and a soldering iron. I recommend red and black cables to match the red positive (+) and black negative (-) standard. If what you get is twin white cable, look for the red line drawn in one the cables to identify the positive cable.
Result
Once you connect the battery with the UPS, it's done! Turn it on and now you have a reliable power supply for your desktop computer.
